What are microplastics, BPA, and phthalates? And why aren't they in our packaging?

¿Qué son los microplásticos, BPA y ftalatos? ¿Y por qué no están en nuestros envases?

BPA, phthalates, microplastics... These are terms that are increasingly being heard in the media and on product labels, but do we really know what they mean and why we should avoid them?
At Sevens Nutrition, we don't just know it: we act accordingly.
That's why our packaging is free of these substances from day one.

What is BPA and why was it so controversial?

BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical compound that has been used for decades to make plastics and coatings for containers, such as baby bottles, cans, and jar lids.

The problem? Several scientific studies have shown that BPA can act as an endocrine disruptor , altering hormonal balance even at very low doses.

➡️ In 2023, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommended a drastic reduction in the tolerable level of BPA, and in 2024 the European Union banned its use in food packaging .

At Sevens Nutrition, our PET containers have never contained BPA.

What are phthalates?

Phthalates are a group of chemicals used as plasticizers to give flexibility to plastics like PVC. They were commonly found in toys, packaging, medical materials, and even some cosmetics.

They have been linked to possible effects on fertility, hormonal development, and other disorders.

Although they are now restricted in Europe, they can still appear on old packaging or on low-quality materials.

➡️ PET doesn't need phthalates . Its structure doesn't require plasticizers.
That's why our packaging is 100% phthalate-free.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics are tiny particles (less than 5 mm) that are generated by the wear and tear of plastic products over time, especially under conditions of heat, friction, or sun exposure.

They have been detected in water, food, and even the human body. Although their long-term effects are still being investigated, EFSA believes their cumulative impact must be controlled.

➡️ PET is a stable and resistant plastic that does not generate microplastics during normal use.
At Sevens we use it for single use, and always under safe conditions.
Furthermore, we do not reuse containers or expose them to extreme conditions.

What about other plastics?

Many plastics that do contain BPA, phthalates, or are easily biodegradable aren't easily identifiable to consumers. That's why it's so important to trust brands that are transparent about their materials .

➡️ At Sevens, we do not use polycarbonate , PVC, or unidentified plastic blends.
Only food-grade PET , approved by EFSA and safe for your health.

In summary…

Our packaging is free of:

  • BPA

  • Phthalates

  • Microplastics (under normal conditions of use)

And all of this isn't a marketing promise. It's a decision based on scientific evidence and a real commitment to your well-being .

We've already seen that it's safe. But... what about the planet?
In the last article in this series, we tell you why PET, when managed properly, is also one of the most environmentally responsible options .
